2. The 18FDG-PET scan shows no significant metabolic activity within the left lower lobe hamartoma
The 18FDG-PET scan (Figure 10) shows no significant metabolic activity within the left lower lobe hamartoma (SUV= 2.2), as one would expect. Metabolic activity is noted in the lingula in a nodular focus at the site of the previous lingular pneumonia. The consolidation resolving to a nodule in the lingula suggests the possibility of coccidioidomycosis.
The patient underwent thoracic surgery 6 months after the bronchoscopic diagnosis, and the left lower lobe hamartoma was uneventfully resected (Figure 11).

Later serologic testing showed that the lingular pneumonia reflected coccidioidomycosis.
