Testing for thrombophilias should only be performed when results will be used to improve or modify management (5). Testing has been suggested to assist with secondary prevention (determining the duration of anticoagulation following a thrombotic event); and for hereditary disorders, to aid in primary prevention in relatives of affected patients
The patient did well in ICU and was about to be transferred to the floor when she suddenly developed cardiovascular collapse. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was unsuccessful and the patient expired. An autopsy showed a saddle pulmonary embolus.
