Vipul Jain MBBS

Dr. Vipul Jain

1974-2025

It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the unexpected passing of Dr. Vipul Jain, a beloved member of the California Thoracic Society (CTS) and a pillar of our pulmonary and critical care community.

Dr. Jain graduated from University of Mumbai in 1997, completed an internal medicine residency at UCSF Fresno and a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at UC San Diego before returning to UCSF Fresno to join the faculty. He served as President of the California Thoracic Society (CTS) during exceptionally challenging times, guiding the organization with grace, clarity, and a deep sense of purpose. His steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and unwavering commitment to collaboration were instrumental in helping our Society navigate through uncertainty and change. He was a trusted voice and a deeply respected colleague whose calm presence reassured and inspired us all.

In addition to his work with CTS, Dr. Jain held various roles at UCSF Fresno, including intern and resident in internal medicine on to division chief and chair of medicine. In all pursuits, Vipul was recognized as an outstanding clinician, mentor, and advocate for patients.

Dr. Jain was not only an accomplished physician and leader, but he was a profoundly compassionate human being. He brought empathy, humility, and kindness to every role he held and to every person he encountered. His passing is an incalculable loss to our profession, our specialty, and all who knew him.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Dr. Ratnali Jain, and their two sons, as well as to his many close colleagues and friends at UCSF and throughout the nation. Our thoughts are with them during this time of profound grief.

Vipul’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—patients, trainees, colleagues, and fellow CTS members. We will miss him dearly. To honor his memory, CTS is establishing the annual Vipul Jain Lifetime Achievement Award for those who have supported CTS’s mission to improve lung health in California and, through advocacy and education, advance the science and practice of pulmonary, sleep, and critical care medicine.
