The American Thoracic Society’s (ATS) rapid interpretation guide can be used to interpret the PFTs (Figure 1).

Using this flow-diagram our patient’s PFTs are most consistent with ILD/Pneumonitis. The PFTs show a moderately reduced FEV1 and a reduced VC and a normal FEV1/VC suggesting a restrictive defect. There is no significant bronchodilator response. The TLC is moderately reduced demonstrating a restrictive dysfunction. The diffusing capacity is moderately reduced. There is no universal agreement upon severity measures-the ones used above are from the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) (2).
